Megan Thee Stallion – Shots Fired
What’s the good news? Megan Thee Stallion has some for us all on her debut album and boy does it start off fierce. The opening track, “Shots Fired”, comes two days after Tory Lanez pleaded “Not Guilty” in Los Angeles County Court to various felony counts including assault with a semiautomatic firearm, personal use of a firearm, and carrying a loaded unregistered firearm in a vehicle, according to the DA’s office.
There are several reasons why the track hits hard but let’s start with the obvious. The producer, Buddah Bless, flips the same David Porter sample that Diddy & Nashiem Myrick flipped for The Notorious B.I.G.’s Who Shot Ya. Nothing beats the original but it’s the callback to a similar situation that Megan banks on to rip into Tory and all of her detractors. Lyrically, Meg is one of the top in the game and this track displays her wordplay and flow right off the bat:
You offered M’s not to talk, I guess that made my friend excited, hmm / Now y’all in cahoots, huh (Okay), you a Puss in Boots / You shot a 5’10” b*tch with a .22 / Talkin’ ’bout bones and tendons like them bullets wasn’t pellets / A p***y n***a with a p***y gun in his feelings / Okay, he in the backseat and he keep callin’ me a b***h (He a b***h) / We all know the shit I could’ve came back with (Lil’-a** n***a) / He talkin’ ’bout his followers, dollars, and goofy sh** I told him, “You’re not poppin’, you just on the remix”
The bridging the gap while staking a new claim on the culture is appreciated. Check out Megan Thee Stallion’s Good News available on all DSPs NOW
Shoutout to Richard Tuomi for submitting today’s feature! Supergroup is a band formed by Big Bill, Richard Tuomi, Eric Homol and Tony Maas (with singer Morgan Braithwaite as a friend of the band). They specialize in Jazzy, Soulful music with hard drums and honest lyrics and what’s apparent between all of them is their love of music.
Their lead single, “Easy”, has a music video that was filmed through Zoom. It’s simple but effective in conveying the message of the song. And who can’t relate during this pandemic? The saying that is most commonly attributed to Bob Dylan goes, “Inspiration is hard to come by. You have to take it where you find it.” and that’s what Supergroup did with Easy. They have a great sound, creative artwork and are just getting started.
Check them out and show some love!
We accept submissions to be featured in the Indie/Hustler Spotlight on Friday Phonk. If you are a creative of any discipline and would like to spread your message and your art, please send a brief bio and release you would like highlighted below
