Final Presidential Debate – Election 2020

With just 12 days until Election Day, and a mere 21 days after President Trump tested positive for COVID-19, Trump and Former VP Biden faced off in the final Presidential Debate. Last weeks’ debate was canceled due to the disagreements between the two campaigns, and the debate committee. About how the debate would be conducted with Trump having tested positive just days after the first debate.

Both candidates have tested negative going into this debate. They are 12 feet apart with the moderator, Kristen Welker, 16 feet away. There was planned to have plexiglass separating the two. With the negative test of both candidates, the plexiglass was removed. All guests were required to wear a mask and have wrist bands confirming a negative COVID-19 diagnosis.

Now lets get into the top moments of the night:

COVID-19:

President Trump claimed that a vaccine is on the way, also that he has survived and that he is not immune to COVID-19. He began by saying the vaccine was weeks away, but not guaranteed, he then continued by saying that the vaccine will be done by the end of the year. This statement was fact checked by CNN, and deemed false.

Biden says “He says we’re learning to live with it, we are learning to die with it… we are dying with it.”

The two went back and forth over how the pandemic should have been handled, to prevent the country from being where it is today. Trump Criticized how the Obama administration handled H1N1, along with Biden’s role during that time.

National Security:

With threats to the Presidential Election by Russia and Iran, how will the candidates react if elected or re-elected.

Biden says any country who interferes with American Elections “will pay the price”-. Biden also stated that “They’re interfering with American sovereignty. That’s what’s going on.”

While Trump on the other hand claimed the efforts of election tampering were in place to stop his re-election. Trump claimed the Director of National Intelligence told him, “They both want you to lose, ‘cause there’s been nobody tougher to Russia.”

Supreme Court:

With the current Supreme Court Nominee hearings complete, one of the biggest topic is Health Care and the future of The Affordable Care Act. If the Supreme Court rules that The Affordable Care Act is Unconstitutional, Biden says his next move would be to pass BidenCare, which is ObamaCare but with a public option.

“If you qualify for Medicaid and you do not have the wherewithal in your state to get Medicaid, you are automatically enrolled,” Biden Said

Trumps response the Health Care in America, “I’d like to terminate Obamacare, come up with a brand new beautiful health care … Come up with better health care, always protecting people with preexisting conditions.”

Race In America:

“The Talk” was brought the the debate stage for the first time in history. This talk comes from Black parents to their children about how to respond when they are pulled over by police, to prevent from being shot.

Biden’s response was a story of his daughter and how he never had to teach this to his daughter, “But a Black parent, no matter how wealthy or how poor they are, has to teach their child.” he continues on with agreeing that there is systematic racism in America.

While President Trump claimed he has done the most for Black people since Abraham Lincoln. Then later stating “I’m the least racist person in this room.”

Climate Change/Environment:

Kristen Welker, mentioned, people of color are much likelier than white people to live near chemical plants and oil refineries, which can cause health problems. President Trump’s administration has lifted restrictions on these facilities, Welker asked, “Why should these families give you another four years in office?”

Trump responded, “I saved it again a number of months ago when oil was crashing because of the pandemic. Say what you want about the relationship, we got Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Russia to cut back, way back. We saved our oil industry and now it is very vibrant. Everyone has very inexpensive gasoline. Remember that.”

Biden’s response, “The fact is, those front line communities, it doesn’t matter what you are paying them. It matters how you keep them safe. What do you do. And you impose restrictions on the pollutants coming out of those fence line communities.” He also reiterated his respond to transition from oil to renewable energy resources.

American Families:

Tonights leading point in the topic were the over 500 children who are without their parents due to being separated by ICE under the Trump administration.

“The children are brought here by coyotes and lots of bad people, cartels, and they’re brought here and they used to use them to get into our country. We now have a strong a border as we’ve ever had. We’re over 400 miles of brand-new wall. You see the numbers. We let people in but they have to come in legally,” Trump said. He also claimed that his administration is working very hard to reunite these children with their missing families.

While Biden responded, “Their kids were ripped from their arms and separated. And now they cannot find over 500 sets of those parents and those kids are alone. Nowhere to go. Nowhere to go. It’s criminal. It’s criminal.” He also mentioned a plan to help immigrants become citizens of America.

While continuing the conversation of immigration, Trump claims that only immigrants with low IQs show up to their court dates.

In the closing statements, Trump decided to attack Biden while Biden offered a vision for America.

Trump: “He will kill it. If he gets in, you will have a depression the likes of which you have never seen. Your 401(k)s will go to hell and it will be a very, very sad day for this country.”

Biden: “I represent all of you, whether you voted for me or against me. And I’m going to make sure that you’re represented. I’m going to give you hope.”
